PRORENA

Since January 2001, the Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS) at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the Tropical Resources Institute at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies have jointly led the Native Species Reforestation Project (PRORENA a research program focused on developing socially, ecologically, and financially integrated strategies for restoring degraded tropical landscapes to diverse tropical forests.

PRORENA maintains a network of 3 field offices, 4 principal field research sites, and 3 native tree nurseries, monitors more than 60,000 trees and conducts on-farm trials with 35+ private landholders. PRORENA presently employs 2 postdoctoral researchers (in silviculture and social ecology), 2 administrative and 6 technical staff, and 20-40 field technicians.

Based at STRI’s facilities in Panama City, the work of PRORENA is carried out with the active participation of nearly two-dozen Latin and North American universities, government agencies, private companies, NGOs, and private individuals.

PRORENA seeks to develop solutions first in the Republic of Panama, and then to extend its impact throughout the Neotropics and across the worldwide network of CTFS plots.
