World Map

The world’s largest tropical forest research program, the Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS) of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute monitors some of the most astonishing forests on the planet. CTFS is a global network of large-scale, long-term forest research plots monitoring more than three million individual tropical trees, representing more than 6,500 tree species, or about 12% of all known tropical tree species.

CTFS conducts long-term large-scale research on forests around the world to

• Increase scientific understanding of forest ecosystems,
• Inform sustainable forest management and natural-resource policy, and
• Build capacity in forest science.
